Day 3 - Via Giulia and the Corso Vittoria Emmanule

We begin the day by walking across the Ponte Sisto bridge from Trastevere. Immediately after crossing the Lungotevere we angle left and down into the much quieter Via Giulia, which at one time overlooked the Tiber River.

Due to repeated floods, the existing man-made river banks and arterial system of one-way roads on either side was built to protect the city from the River waters. Before that time, this Via Giulia was a proud street of expensive palaces overlooking the river views.

We will see the Palazzo Falconieri, the Palazzo Farnese and the bridge the Farnese's built on the eve of their bankruptcy, the church of S. Eligio dei Orifici (the gold-smith's church), and the Florentine's S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini, where the famous architect Borromini's body remains buried.

When the Via Giulia meets the Corso Vittoria Emmanuele, we turn onto that major road and work our way across what was at one time a marshy valley.

We stop in to see Chiesa Nuova, also known as S. Maria in Valicella (St. Mary's in the Valley), S. Andrea della Vale, Il Gesu', the great Jesuit church, and S. Ignazio.
